Last Night

Last night I dreamed that I was a spectator at a soccer game. This is not so unusual to dream but what was unusual was the soccer game was played by two teams of Orthodox Jews. I don't recall if anything was at stake other than it was just a game. At times during the dream I was a participant in the game. Running up and down the field chasing a blue and white soccer ball with the star of David where the black hexagon is usually found. I was the only gentile on the field among the Hassidim Jews. I know this because I was the only one without a black ten gallon hat and black coat. Occasionally, during the game I would be in the stands of the stadium with the spectators. I watched as the two teams clumsily try to maneuver the ball in black leather street shoes on the green grassy field. The tassels of their locks and the threads of cords (tzittzit) that hung beneath their black coats whirred in the air in slow motion as they locked themselves into a black cluster. The fans in the stands listen intently to boombox's mounted on their shoulders as the Hebrew commentators filled the air with stats and color commentary of the two teams. From this point of view in the stands I couldn't tell one team from the other. With the blink of an eye I would find myself on the field running with a pack of bearded men chasing the soccer ball. It is at this point that I recall that there was no field goal, no goal post. There was definitely competition between the two teams but no real resolve. I can only guess that my dream can mean nothing or that in life there are no goals just he playing field where we can choose to be spectators or players. Whatever dreams are meant to be, I can't say. But for this dream it sure was entertaining.
